How Invisalign Braces Work

Invisalign teeth aligners are invisible “braces” used to straighten the teeth. Traditional braces used metal brackets and wires and retainers to move the teeth into place. Invisalign braces are a modern alternative that are totally clear and not easily seen by others.

Who can use Invisalign aligners?

Since the Invisalign aligners are customized for each person to have a tight fit, they work best for teens and adults. They are not ideal for children since their mouths are still growing. Clear aligners are usually used for patients who are experiencing moderately or mildly crowded teeth. They are also ideal for those who just have some minor spacing problems.

How do the aligners work?

A dental professional will design a treatment plan for moving the teeth back into place. They will create a series of aligners so that slight adjustments are made in the aligners and your teeth over time. The clear acrylic or plastic aligners fit snuggly on the teeth. However, the advantage they have over traditional braces is they can be removed for brushing, flossing and eating. Every few weeks the patient is given a new aligner to help keep the teeth moving in the right direction.

How long do aligners take to work?

Treatment times are different for each person and will depend largely on how much the teeth are needing to be moved. Teeth which are more crooked will take a lot longer time to straighten. For those who only need slight adjustments may only need to wear them for 10 weeks.
